Eric Norman

Pormpuraaw Art and Culture Centre

Eric was born in Pormpuraaw and went to school here.

He started painting as an adult. His first work was a simple painting of his mother, father, a child, three dogs and a seagull. When he finished this work, he thought God was telling him to keep painting. ‘God decided that I was a painter, and he guided me’.

Eric mainly paints works about the wetland (Pambe) – country around his homeland, Bull Lake and Catfish Yard. He loves how the early wet season brings the country alive with colour of many different flowers, and the Pambe is filled with birds – Magpie Geese, Black Ducks and Cranes.

He also likes to paint these landscapes at night when the moon is full and it’s possible to sit quietly and listen to the sounds of Nature.
