Gapaya is the son of Guykuḏa Munuŋgurr. His mother is Bininydjiwuy Wunuŋmurra. He has a little brother. His father has another daughter, Makamunu, whose mother is Djirrirra. Although Gapaya normally lives with his mum at Gurrumuru he also spends time at Garrthalala and Waṉḏawuy. He is an active homelands school student who uses the internet to access records from his art centre.
