The piti or wooden bowl is a traditional woman’s carrying vessel for food and water. Contemporary artists use walka, patterns burnt into the wood with wire, which relate Tjukurpa, stories about Tjukuritja or the Creation Ancestors and activities which shaped the land, its people and Law. Details of Tjukurpa are restricted to senior custodians however this piti relates part of the Kungkarangkalpa or Seven Sisters Tjukurpa which has been made available for public sharing.

A cunning man known as Wati Nyiru pursues the sisters, relentlessly trying to trick them into marriage. In their flight from him they create many land forms across Australia before escaping into the sky to become the constellation known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters.

This piti is made from eucalyptus gum from Yalata in the Great Australian Bite.
