This painting depicts Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay), the country and Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) of the artist’s father and artist, Gideon Tjupurrula Jack. Lake Mackay is located along the Western Australia / Northern Territory border and is the largest of hundreds of ephemeral salt lakes scattered throughout the region.

As passed down to Zakius form his father and grandfather, the painting tells the story of a large bushfire that travelled west from the east, turning the land into a lake, creating Lake Mackay. Wilkinkarra is a site of secret men’s Dreaming. Zakius says, “Grandfather told me about that fire coming”. In his paintings, the circles in the paintings stand for water holes scattered around and the lines between are the tracks of animals looking for water.

Zakius also states that bushmen and women continue to travel to Lake Mackay today, going hunting for kangaroo and goanna. He says it is very dangerous to go there at night and that people shouldn’t camp there.
