Maath has painted Nayuhyungki, the ‘first people’ of creation time. They were the ancestors of the present day bininj (Aboriginal people). These people were taught everything they needed to know by Mimihs, the original spirit beings of the region. According to the Kunwinjku people of Western Arnhem Land, Mimih spirits existed before humans and taught aspects of ceremony, hunting and bush food collection. Nayuhyungki are often depicted carrying hunting spears, spear throwers and woven fibre dilly bags. Maath has depicted these ‘Nayuhyungki’ hunting for one of his favorite bush foods the ‘Karbarda’ or Long yam.
