Kudjewk is the monsoon season, normally occurring in the first three months of the year. Kadjaldjakdung – literally it just rains and rains. The wind and weather come from the north west. The ngalkordow or brolga (centre), a waterbird that nests on the ground, is shown feeding on the modje reed that grows on the flood plains. Kudjewk is the time of year when ngalkordow and numerous other birds such as the manimunak or magpie goose (bottom left) nest. The Brolga is painted in the classic Kunwinjku ‘x-ray’ style, with her internal organs showing. Brolgas are a favorite subject of paintings from the Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) area in western Arnhem Land because brolgas and their eggs are prized game for the local Aboriginal people. The reptiles are borlokko the water python and burarr the water goanna. The animals have been painted in the classic Kunwinjku “x-ray” style with internal organs showing and rarrk or cross-hatching filling the rest of their bodies.
