Two Goannas / Kara Marra (good meat), 2023

This is out at Lyiltjarra, my Outstation. My seven dogs saw two goannas up a tree. They smelt the goannas and went after them, chasing and barking. I was with my sister Sylvia’s daughter, my niece Nellie. We jumped up and started chasing the goannas too! They ran away, along the sand, and down into their hole where they live underground. We grabbed branches to use for digging sticks and started digging. When we dig for goanna, we dig until the hole is big enough, then we push the dirt away and stick our arms down there and grab the goannas by their tails to catch them! We took those goannas home, Nellie and me, made a fire and cooked them up for all the family. Lots of yellow fat inside – good eating! Goanna is ‘kara marra’ (good meat). I love to eat bush tucker; goanna, bush turkey. Bush tucker makes me feel healthy in my body, strong. I don’t have to go to the shops. Western Aranda people know how to find food out bush, in our Country.
