Mary Napangardi James
Barkly Regional Arts“I am Warlpiri and my country is Ngarnalkurru, which is within the Lander river area, having land and family connection with Yinapaka through to Yawarrka as a kurdungurlu. This country lies on the North West, Wampana, North to Kalantjipa area. I started painting back in the eighties, while I was living in Lajamanu community. During this time, my paintings were about ngurlu (seeds), wardapi (goanna), wampana (wallaby), and Karlawurru (water goanna) dreamings. My paintings have gradually shifted to a contemporary inspiration but still using mostly earth colours.”
Mary James’ interest in colour, pattern and repetition make for meticulously crafted paintings with a natural sense of colour harmonies.
