Balanjdjarrangalanj is a friendly spirit that my grandfather, Lofty Nadjamerrek, told me about. His head is like a kangaroo, and he lives in a hollow tree on the plateaus of stone country. He walks around with his cheeky black snake, and eats raw snakes that he catches with his club/fighting stick. We can’t see him with our own eyes. The only people who can see him are “Clever People”, traditional healers.

I painted this spirit after seeing an old bark painting my grandfather painted back in 1969. I put my handprints on the work as my signature.
