This story relates to a place called Benukkadjang, (Bush Turkey Dreaming) a hill downstream from Cahill’s crossing in Gunbalanya. A man once lived there who had a terrible sickness called Yibba. He had sores all over him, he smelt, and he could hardly see. His wife gave him food only on the end of a stick for fear of getting the sickness.
One day his wife’s family came by, and said they were going off for a few days. The man begged his wife to stay with him, but she left with her family. And so he was all alone, sick and with the mosquitos biting him.
Suddenly, a number of the Nayuhyungki were there, the Ancestor spirits. “Kanbidkarrmen”, one of them told him: “Take my hand”. And so he took his hand and stood up. They took him to a cave on a hill, where there was a pool of clear water. “Yibokarrmen”, the Ancestor told him. “Touch the water”. And he reached his hand into the water, although he could hardly see it through his sick eyes. “Yidjuhmen, yimimbayhmen” the Ancestor told him. “Dive in, and open you eyes”. “You will see a hole ahead of you, swim towards it”. So he dived in, and there really was a water filled tunnel which lead to another pool.
As he emerged on the other side, he felt revived. “Ngabba, kanmarnbom!” he told the spirit who had helped him. “Father, you’ve cured me!” His body was clear of sores, and he could see again. And so he entered the spirit’s family, as his son. One of his new sisters came and gave him a fighting stick (miyarrurl) and two spears. But she told him “Don’t hit your wife, my ngalkurrng (poison cousin). She will be part of our family”. And so instead of taking revenge on his wife and her family for abandoning him, they were taken into the spirit family. He put the weapons in his home and never used them.
From the time the man entered the spirit family, he took on a new identity, Benukkadjang (Bush Turkey Dreaming). The Dreaming site is still there today on a hill by the East Alligator River.
