Forty-five minutes northeast of Uncle Nick’s hometown resides one of many all-but abandoned Tasmanian gold-mining towns; this one is named Mathinna. In the centre of the town sits a small plaque with a tiny image of a young Aboriginal child, boasting the text MATHINNA, ABORIGINAL GIRL BEFRIENDED BY LADY FRANKLIN AFTER WHOM THIS TOWN WAS NAMED. Both the town and the child were abandoned by their caregivers.

In reimagining Mathinna’s short life, Uncle Nick presents the child with a torch of fire which she holds, unwavering, above the watchful eyes of petroglyphic rock country.

Nick Kupetsky is a palawa man from central Tasmania and has been a creative practitioner for over twenty years. Nick’s multi-media practice explores the deep and dark ancestral histories of palawa country, as well as the artist’s own private moments of cultural discovery and revelation.
