The Hunter & Gatherer shows aspects of the life of coastal palawa community, who took the fish from the sea and occasionally hunted the kangaroo inland. The work depicts Uncle Nick’s great unity with nature. Spirals are typical of palawa mark-making and have been found carved into rocks by the sea, holding great spiritual significance. The artist uses the imagery of the Tasmanian Tiger to symbolise the extinction of not only the animal itself, but many palawa cultural histories.

Nick Kupetsky is a palawa man from central Tasmania and has been a creative practitioner for over twenty years. Nick’s multi-media practice explores the deep and dark ancestral histories of palawa country, as well as the artist’s own private moments of cultural discovery and revelation.
