The Wuymirri (whale) is a song line from creation times. The story tells about the whale and its travels across the sea and land. The story is sung and danced in ceremonies. Its a sacred story for Yolngu. Munyuku paint this story and tell of a fight between a spirit figure and the whale at Yarrinya. At Nganngimburra at the top of Elcho Island there is a special place for Warramiri. This is where the story of Wuymirri comes from. This whale has many names. There were many dogs heading north following the smell of the dead whale. There was a dog from Djeliwirri called Djuranydjura and another dog from Garrandjirr. There were Dhuwa dogs too, Lurrmur and Rupundhu. There are triangle patterns used in this design and they represent clouds, the dead whale and even the sunset.
