Palawa man William Lanne was based on whaling ships for many years, along the coast of Tasmania, and by all reports he would go in a trance when he saw the shoreline. This acrylic portrait of the young William is on unstretched canvas.  When William died in 1869 his body was mutilated and cut up by scientists competing for his skeleton, a symbol of the racially intolerant and violent colony. It was said that Crother, the premier at the time, beheaded William Lanne and a statue erected in Hobart in Crother’s name. This statue has been a source of controversy which ensued a lengthy legal process to have the statue removed.

Nick Kupetsky is a palawa man from central Tasmania and has been a creative practitioner for over twenty years. Nick’s multi-media practice explores the deep and dark ancestral histories of palawa country, as well as the artist’s own private moments of cultural discovery and revelation.
