Milingimbi artists choose to create their woven artworks solely using materials harvested from their homelands. This piece is made from gunga (pandanus).
The new shoots of the pandanus palm are plucked from the central crown of the tree. The fine serrated edges are removed by running a fingernail down each side of the frond, which is then split into two and peeled to expose the inner fibre. Using extensive knowledge of local vegetation, these strips are then dyed using colours extracted from the leaves, roots and bark of selected native plants and left to dry in the sun. Following this lengthy process, the artist weaves the prepared fibres into their desired form.
The bright pink colour in this piece is unusual in artwork from Milingimbi. The plant that the pink colour is derived from grows in the rocky country on the mainland at the end of the wet session. Milingimbi artists only have access to this plant when they travel west for funerals or other business, and there is great excitement in the studio when an artist returns with a supply of it. The beautiful green is made from boiling the ‘heart’ of the pandanus palm. The copper brown colour is extracted from the root of guḻtjiguḻtji. The yellows and oranges come from the root of the guninyi tree – harvested from nearby islands.

All Domestic Shipping is included within the costs of works. International shipping rates will be charged separately at the end of the online fair. Please contact us for rates.
We will begin packing artworks at the conclusion of the online fair, please allow 1-3 weeks for delivery depending on the scale of the work and final destination.
Small works (under 105cm) will be sent with Australia Post with tracking if email is provided. Please check your spam folder for Auspost Tracking message
Larger works will be sent to Darwin with Fly Tiwi or Barge Express (depending on dimensions and weight) to be delivered to final destination by TNT couriers or DHL (for international customers).

- Shipping and freight costs are not included in the advertised purchase price unless this is stipulated at the point of purchase of the item by the Art Centre/Vendor.
- All freight and shipping must be arranged directly with the Art Centre/Vendor from where the purchase was made.
- If multiple items are purchased from different Art Centres/Vendors in the same transaction, customers must arrange shipping with each Art Centre/Vendor.
- Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair takes no responsibility for the distribution and arrival times of freight. As the Art Centres/Vendors participating in the online Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair are located in some of the most remote locations in Australia, freight services can be inconsistent.
