This painting depicts a dhuwa story for the Djambarrpuyŋu clan.

The artist Jason Dhawulunbulun explains how the biyawick (Black Shouldered Kite) is sitting in the tree and watching the mäpan (witchetty grub). The mäpan is sleeping and moving around on the ground. After that he got up and walked like a Yolŋu person, and he danced a shark buŋgul (ceremonial dance). He turned into the shark”. The mäpan changes into Burpula (as a Yolŋu person) and then Garrkapuy (as a shark).

Djambarrpuyngu people have a manikay (ceremonial song) for this story that is permormed at bäpurru (funeral ceremonies).
