This is the Nabaltja, frog. When you hear them calling out, singing out loud – thats when you know rain is coming. Some people, my ancestors, used to eat frog, but not this type of frog, they used to eat the sand frog. These frogs camouflage themselves near the leaves and water, sometimes hide in the trees. This one is sitting in the kogrukku (yellow sand), and its coming up to warm weather, before the rain.

In the dreamtime this frog swallowed all the earth’s water. After that all the animals came together and had a meeting, to growl that frog for drinking it all. He was huge, the size of a mountain. All the animals set out to make him laugh, to spray that water back out. Thats why he is so small and tiny now, hiding in the pandanus, because all the animals growled him. He is there, not looking out at everyone, but with his head and eyes low.

In the artwork is also Yulu (flowers), nooglemary (white stork), mononganae (fresh water turtle), armulah (brim) and marrallu (prawns). Yahwal (water)m arru (rock), kogrukku (yellow sand).
