The Canning Stock Route is an 1850kms long tract of land that runs from Wiluna in the Northern Goldfields to Halls Creek in the Kimberley. It is named after Alfred Canning who first surveyed the route in 1906. From 1908 to 1910 some 48 wells were constructed but the use of the stock route by cattlemen was never popular and the last drove took place in 1959. Today the Canning Stock Route is a popular 4WD adventure and attacts tourists from across Australia. Considered to be a particularly challenging course it has become a tempting lure for experienced off road enthusiasts. For the Martu people who are the original inhabitants of this area of land the C.S.R has much cultural significance as many were born on the wells or on the lands on which the C.S.R lies and it is an important part of their recent histories.
