About Warnayaka Art

The Warlpiri, of Warnayaka Art, live in Lajamanu, N.T.

Traditionally, their artwork was painted on peoples’ bodies during ceremony and as large mosaics on the ground.  They also did designs in sand, on artefacts and on rocks.

Since the mid-1980s, Warlpiri stories have been painted with acrylic on canvas and used to educate younger generations. In keeping with technology, Warlpiri children have discovered digital art and other contemporary mediums to keep alive the stories and traditions.

Previously known as Hooker Creek, Lajamanu (traditionally owned by Gurindji people) was established in 1949 when the government began to move Warlpiri people from Yuendumu.  Unable to settle on the ‘foreign’ land, the Warlpiri ‘refugees’ repeatedly walked back to their original communities until an agreement was reached to share the land.

Warnayaka Art is a community centre that welcomes all Lajamanu residents and visitors to the area. The artists share stories and culture to maintain Warlpiri tradition.
